Seniors get relief from their annual healthcare expenses through Medicare Parts A & B. These federally-funded programs cover hospital and medical costs as you age, but they don’t cover all expenses. You’ll have a 20% out-of-pocket expense involved in covering the remainder of costs not fully covered by Medicare Parts A & B.
A Medigap plan can fully or partially cover these out-of-pocket expenses. Private healthcare insurers, like Medical Mutual, offer Medigap plans. You can sign up for Medigap during Open Enrollment in the six months after your 65th birthday. During this time, Medical Mutual must accept your application to join its Medigap scheme, even if you have pre-existing health conditions.
This post looks at Medical Mutual Medicare supplement plans. We’ll unpack the benefits of each plan, the average monthly premiums, and the perks.

Who Is Medical Mutual?
Founded in 1956, Medical Mutual was formed to offer coverage for doctor charges. Medical Mutual of Cleveland later affiliated itself with the Blue Shield Association. It is the largest and oldest health insurance company in Cleveland, Ohio, serving over 1.6 million clients.
In 1997, Medical Mutual left the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, reclaiming the branding of Medical Mutual of Ohio. The company has headquarters in the Rose Building in Cleveland, with offices in Columbus, Cincinnati, Independence, Dayton, Toledo, Richfield, and Youngstown.

Medical Mutual Medicare Supplement Plans – Benefits & Coverage
Medical Mutual Medigap plans have standardized benefits tightly regulated by the CMS, a federal agency. The CMS ensures all Medigap providers offer standardized benefits for Medicare Parts A & B, creating a level of consistency for consumers. The Medicare Part A & B benefits available in Medical Mutual Medigap plans are the same as all other insurers.
All Medigap plans offer the following benefits for Original Medicare Parts A & B.
- Part A coinsurance and hospital costs for up to 365 days after using up Medicare benefits.
- Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment.
- Part B coinsurance or copayment.
- Blood transfusion costs for the first three pints of blood.
Plans C*, F*, G, and N offer additional Medicare Parts A & B benefits.
- Part A deductible.
- Part B excess charges (Plan N doesn’t cover these charges).
- Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance.
- 80% of emergency healthcare costs when traveling outside the US for 60 days. ($250 deductible and $50,000 maximum apply).
- Unlimited coverage for all out-of-pocket costs.
*Plans C & F are discontinued for seniors eligible for Medicare after January 1, 2020. The reason for phasing out the plans is its benefit covering the Medicare Part B deductible. You can enroll in Plans C & F with Medical Mutual if you’re eligible for Original Medicare before the cut-off date, but you’ll undergo a medical underwriting.
Underwriting allows the insurer to assess your health. If you have pre-existing conditions, they can charge higher-than-average rates for your monthly premiums or deny your application to join their Medigap scheme. You may qualify for guaranteed issue rights that help you avoid underwriting. Call our agents to find out if you are eligible for these consumer protections.

What Medical Mutual Medicare Supplement Plans Don't Cover
Medigap plans come with benefits covering the out-of-pocket expenses related to services covered by Original Medicare Parts A & B. Therefore, you don’t have coverage for medical or hospital expenses unrelated to these benefits. For instance, there’s no coverage for vision, hearing, and dental services. You don’t have coverage for cosmetic procedures or prescriptions.
Medigap plans don’t cover stays at unskilled nursing homes or private duty nursing. There’s no coverage for preventative treatments at the chiropractor, physiotherapist, acupuncturist, or podiatrist unless a doctor deems them medically necessary. In that case, Medicare would provide coverage, and Medigap would cover the out-of-pocket costs.
Medical Mutual Medicare Supplement Plans – Premiums
Medical Mutual creates a risk profile on your hen joining its Medigap scheme. They look at information like age, gender, location, and smoking status to form your risk profile and set your premiums according to the risk you present to its Medigap scheme.
Premium costs can vary widely depending on your risk profile. Our research shows a 65-year-old female nonsmoker can expect to pay the following average rates on Medigap plans with Medical Mutual.
*Your premiums may differ depending on your risk profile.
