Medicare supplement plans, known as “Medigap,” cover the out-of-pocket costs associated with Original Medicare Part A & B benefits.
Original Medicare is a federally-funded program, but Medigap policies are available from private healthcare insurers, like Humana, and regulated by the CMS, a federal agency.
There are ten Medigap plans, all offering various levels of coverage for Medicare Part A & B benefits. Some partially cover these costs, while others provide full coverage. The most comprehensive plan in the Medigap range is Plan F. Plan F covers all Medicare Part A & B benefits, leaving you with no out-of-pocket costs.
The “First Dollar Coverage” provided by Plan F means you don’t pay anything for your Medicare expenses other than a monthly premium to your plan provider. Plan F (along with Plan C) are the only Medigap policies covering the Medicare Part B deductible.
This benefit, and the first dollar coverage offered, makes Plan F the most popular policy with Medigap beneficiaries.
This post examines the benefits, average premiums, and perks available with Humana Medicare Supplement Plan F.

Why Is Humana Medicare Supplement Plan F Being Discontinued?
Medigap Plan F covers the Medicare Part B deductible. The “Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015”, also known as MACRA. This Act prevents Medigap providers, like Humana, from offering plans covering the Medicare Part B deductible for seniors qualifying for Medicare after January 1, 2020.
If you’re eligible for Medicare after this cut-off date, you can go with Plan G for your Medigap policy over Plan F. The only thing Plan G doesn’t cover that Plan F does is the Medicare Part B deductible. However, average Plan G premiums are cheaper than Plan F premiums. Therefore, the savings you make on your annual premiums with Plan G over Plan F usually account for the cost of the Part B deductible.
If you were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020, you can apply for Plan F or high-deductible Plan F from Humana. However, you have to undergo medical underwriting when applying for the policy. Medical underwriting requires you to divulge your pre-existing conditions to Humana.
If the company feels you are high-risk to insure, they can increase your monthly Plan F premiums above the market average for the policy. In some instances, you might qualify for “guaranteed issue rights,” allowing you to avoid medical underwriting.
Our qualified agents can assist you with your Plan F application and advise if you qualify for guaranteed issue rights protections.
What Humana Medicare Supplement Plan F Doesn't Cover
Medigap plans don’t cover medical or hospital expenses unrelated to Original Medicare Parts A & B. If Medicare doesn’t cover something, Medigap won’t cover it either. So, you don’t have any coverage for your prescriptions – Medicare Part D covers this expense.
You don’t have coverage for stays at unskilled nursing homes or private-duty nursing. There’s no coverage for cosmetic procedures, like teeth whitening. You don’t have coverage for vision, dental, and hearing services. There’s no coverage for preventative treatments at the chiropractor, physiotherapist, acupuncturist, or podiatrist.
In some cases, Medicare will cover physiotherapy, chiropractic, or dental services if your doctor deems them medically necessary.
What's the Difference Between Standard & High-Deductible Plan F?
Medigap Plan F is available in two versions – Standard and high-deductible. The difference is that the high-deductible plan increases the Medicare Part A deductible from $1,600 to $2,700. You get a much more affordable premium in return for a higher deductible. In some instances, depending on your risk profile, you could see a 75% to 80% reduction in monthly premiums over the standard Plan F.
Humana Medicare Supplement Plan F – Premiums
Humana premiums for Plan F policies vary between beneficiaries, depending on your “risk profile.” Humana will assess your age, gender, smoking status, and location in the United States when setting your premiums. Here are the average premium rates for the standard Humana Plan F in the following states.
Humana Medicare Supplement Plan F – Additional Benefits & Discounts
Humana offers members several benefits and perks for beneficiaries. You get up to a 12% household discount in select areas. The Go360 Wellness program offers beneficiaries discounts on prescriptions, hearing and vision services, and health products and supplements.
You also have access to the SilverSneakers program for discounted rates on gym memberships, with thousands of partner locations across the country. You also get a discount on the Lifeline medical alert service for qualifying members.
Other perks Humana offers include a meal delivery service for beneficiaries returning home after a hospital stay and 24/7 access to a nursing line for free medical advice over the phone.
